Respond to an archive (or collection), work ‘with and against’ it. Work together in groups (between 2–4) – note: the archive does not need to be tackled in its entirety. When approaching the material (and your own project), hold onto these questions posted at the entrance to Mining the Museum, a 1994 exhibition by artist Fred Wilson at Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore which used the museum’s archives as a site for excavation, reflection and critique; they read:

What is it?
Where is it? Why?
What is it saying?
How is it used?
For whom was it created?
For whom does it exist?
Who is represented?
How are they represented?
Who is doing the telling? The hearing?
What do you see?
What do you hear?
What can you touch?
What do you feel?
What do you think?
Where are you?
